Earth Month provides an opportunity for everyone, including businesses, to take action to reduce their environmental footprint, protect natural resources, and preserve the planet for future generations. By focusing on the health of the earth, we can create a healthier and more sustainable future for all living beings.
At the Cat's Meow Salon we believe every little bit helps, and the 5 R's (REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, REPURPOSE, and REFUSE) are all important practices that can help make our home and planet more environmentally sustainable
In the salon, I opt to mix enough colour for your appointment, but not more than enough. It's better to go back and mix more than to waste it.
At home, I reduce waste by using a Lomi countertop composter to combat food waste and I also have been known to create my own dishes with what is left over in the fridge! I also shop secondhand for clothes and other items so that I am not contributing to fast fashion.
Food waste is the biggest contributor to landfills. At home, try to look up new recipes or ways to use up what is in your fridge and pantry to reduce how much ends up in the garbage.
There is no "away" When you throw something out. So in the salon, we have reduced the amount of single use items like paper towels, single use plastic bags, plastic bottles, and much more.
At home, I reuse old t-shirts for rags, shop in secondhand stores for clothing and decor, and so much more. You can try using reusable bins or bags for grocery shopping, using reusable water bottles, and cloth napkins instead of paper.
Not everything you think is recyclable. Be careful what you buy and then put in the blue box. At the salon, we keep up to date with everything that can be recycled and do our best to practice the other R's on what can't be recycled.
Take a look on the Quinte Waste Solutions website for more information on what can be recycled, sort your recycling, and do your best to use what can't be recycled!
Pintrest has so many fun ideas for how you can turn something old into new again. I love these types of projects! We have repurposed wood made into a tree to hold products behind my chair, and to hold gift boxes during the winter season. We repurpose different decor to help display our products and come up with creative solutions to repurpose things.
At home I'm always on Pintrest finding new projects to breathe life into old things. Find things that you can repurpose, and start a new project!
That's why I only use clean, non toxic plant based beauty products in my salon and at home. The makeup, skincare, and haircare (including our colour and lighteners) used at The Cat's Meow Salon are 95% to 99% naturally derived! It's both safe and effective. Plus both the lines that I carry are leaping bunny approved, which means they are not tested on animals.
At home, try using rechargeable batteries, refusing single-use items as much as possible, and only buying what you'll need and use. Remember what you have at home when you go shopping and think about the basic items that you'll need and use often.
